How to use the dice roller

  • Enter the number of dice to roll, from 1 to 20.
  • Pick a die: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, d100, or Custom for any die from 2 to 1,000 sides.
  • Optionally enter a modifier from −100 to 100, such as +3 for a bonus or −2 for a penalty.
  • Press Roll. The result shows every die, their sum and the total with the modifier. The Details card keeps your last 10 rolls.

Dice notation

Games write rolls as NdS + M: N dice with S sides each, plus a modifier M. For example, 3d6 + 2 means roll three six-sided dice, add them up and add 2. The total of 3d6 + 2 can be anything from 5 (three 1s plus 2) to 20 (three 6s plus 2).

Worked example

You roll 3d6 + 2 and the dice show 1, 6 and 4:

  • Sum of dice: 1 + 6 + 4 = 11
  • Total: 11 + 2 = 13

How the rolls are made fair

Each die uses your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, the same kind of randomness used for passwords and encryption keys. A simple remainder trick on a random number would make some faces very slightly more likely than others. To avoid that, the roller throws away the rare random values that would cause such a bias and draws again, so every face of every die has exactly the same chance.

Good to know

  • Every roll is independent. A die does not remember earlier results, so a run of low numbers does not make a high number more likely next time.
  • Rolling more dice makes totals cluster around the middle. One d6 is equally likely to show any number, but the sum of 3d6 lands on 10 or 11 far more often than on 3 or 18.
  • A d100 gives a whole number from 1 to 100, which is handy for percentage tables in games.
  • Your roll history is kept only on the page in your browser. It is not saved or sent anywhere and disappears when you reload or leave the page.

Frequently asked questions

Is this online dice roller really random?

Yes. It uses the Web Crypto random number generator built into your browser and rejects the few values that would make some faces more likely, so every face has an equal chance on every roll.

What does 2d20 + 5 mean?

Roll two twenty-sided dice, add their results together, then add 5. Enter 2 as the number of dice, choose d20 and type 5 as the modifier.

Can I roll a die with an unusual number of sides?

Yes. Choose Custom and enter any whole number of sides from 2 to 1,000, for example 3 for a three-way choice or 30 for a d30.

Is my roll history saved?

No. The last 10 rolls are kept only in the open page so you can look back during a game. Nothing is stored or sent to a server, and the history is cleared when you reload or leave the page.
