How to use the discount calculator
- Enter the original price of the item.
- Enter the discount percentage, for example 25 for 25% off.
- If there is an extra offer, such as a coupon on top of a sale, enter it as the extra discount.
- Add a sales tax rate if tax is charged at the checkout.
- Press Calculate to see how much you save and what you will pay.
How the price is calculated
Price after discount = Original price × (1 − Discount / 100) × (1 − Extra discount / 100)
Tax = Price after discount × Tax rate / 100, and the final price is the price after discount plus tax. Every money amount is rounded to two decimal places.
Worked example
A jacket costs 120.00 and is 30% off, with a coupon for a further 10% off and 7% sales tax:
- After the first discount: 120.00 × 0.70 = 84.00
- After the coupon: 84.00 × 0.90 = 75.60
- You save 120.00 − 75.60 = 44.40
- Tax: 75.60 × 0.07 = 5.29
- Final price: 75.60 + 5.29 = 80.89
Stacked discounts are not added together
A second discount is taken from the price that is already reduced, not from the original price. That is why 20% off followed by 10% off saves 28%, not 30%. The calculator shows this combined discount whenever you enter a second one.
Good to know
- Sales tax is normally charged on the discounted price, which is how this calculator works.
- A 100% discount makes the item free, and any rate above 100% is rejected.
- The order of two percentage discounts does not change the final price: 10% then 20% gives the same result as 20% then 10%.
