How to use the salary calculator
Enter a gross pay amount and choose the period it covers, such as per hour, per month or per year. Then check your work schedule:
- Hours per week: 40 by default.
- Days per week: 5 by default.
- Weeks worked per year: 52 by default. Lower it if you take unpaid time off, for example 50 for two unpaid weeks.
Press Calculate to see a table of the equivalent pay for every period. The period you entered is highlighted. All figures are gross pay, before income tax, social security and other deductions.
How the conversion works
The calculator first turns your pay into an annual amount, then divides that by the number of periods in a year:
- Hourly: hours per week × weeks worked
- Daily: days per week × weeks worked
- Weekly: weeks worked
- Bi-weekly: weeks worked ÷ 2
- Semi-monthly: 24
- Monthly: 12
- Quarterly: 4
- Annual: 1
Hourly, daily and weekly pay depend on how much you actually work, while semi-monthly, monthly and quarterly pay are fixed shares of the year.
Worked examples
- 25 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 25 × 40 × 52 = 52,000 a year. That equals 200 a day, 1,000 a week, 2,000 every two weeks, 2,166.67 semi-monthly, 4,333.33 a month and 13,000 a quarter.
- A 60,000 salary with 50 paid working weeks and 40-hour weeks works out to 1,200 a week and 60,000 ÷ 2,000 hours = 30 an hour, while the monthly amount stays 5,000.
Good to know
- Bi-weekly and semi-monthly are not the same: bi-weekly pay arrives 26 times a year with 52 weeks, semi-monthly pay 24 times.
- Overtime, bonuses, shift premiums and paid leave policies are not modelled, so treat the results as estimates.
- Take-home pay depends on taxes and deductions where you live, which this calculator does not include.
- Hours per week can be 1 to 168, days per week 1 to 7 and weeks per year 1 to 52.
