How to use the pace calculator
First choose what you want to find:
- Pace: enter a distance and a time.
- Time: enter a distance and a pace.
- Distance: enter a time and a pace.
For the distance, pick a common race (5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon or 1 mile) or choose Custom distance and type any distance in kilometers or miles. Enter times as hours, minutes and seconds; you can leave a field empty if it is zero. Enter a pace as minutes and seconds per kilometer or per mile. Press Calculate to see the answer, together with the pace in both min/km and min/mi and the speed in km/h and mph.
The formulas
Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance, so the three values are linked by simple relationships:
- Pace = time ÷ distance
- Time = pace × distance
- Distance = time ÷ pace
Speed is the reverse of pace: speed in km/h = 60 ÷ pace in minutes per km. The calculator uses the international mile of exactly 1.609344 km to convert between units.
Worked examples
- 5K in 25:00: 1,500 seconds ÷ 5 km = 300 seconds, a pace of 5:00 per km. Multiplying by 1.609344 gives about 483 seconds, or 8:03 per mile. The speed is 12 km/h, or about 7.46 mph.
- Marathon at 8:00 per mile: the marathon is 42.195 km, about 26.22 miles. 26.22 × 8 minutes gives a finish time of about 3:29:45.
- One hour at 6:00 per km: 60 ÷ 6 = 10 km, or about 6.21 miles.
Good to know
- Results are rounded to the nearest second, so converting back and forth can differ by a second.
- Race courses are measured along the shortest possible route. GPS watches usually record a slightly longer distance, so your watch pace may look a little faster than your official pace.
- Hills, heat, wind and fatigue all slow you down. A pace you can hold for 5K is usually faster than one you can hold for a marathon.
- The calculator warns you if a pace is faster than 1:30 per km or slower than 60:00 per km, because such values are almost certainly typing mistakes.
