How to use the tip calculator
- Enter the bill amount before the tip.
- Choose a tip percentage with one of the quick buttons, or type your own value.
- Enter how many people are sharing the bill.
- Tick Round up the total per person if everyone would rather pay a whole amount.
- Press Calculate to see the tip, the total, and what each person owes.
How the tip is calculated
Tip = Bill × Tip % / 100, rounded to the nearest cent. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each share is the total divided by the number of people.
Worked example
A bill of 84.50 with an 18% tip gives 84.50 × 0.18 = 15.21 in tip and 99.71 in total. Split between three people, each pays about 33.24.
Rounding up each share
With rounding switched on, each share goes up to the next whole amount. In the example above, 33.24 becomes 34.00, so the group pays 102.00 in total. The extra 2.29 is added to the tip, and the calculator shows the new effective tip percentage, which here is about 20.71%.
Good to know
- Without rounding, splitting a total into equal shares can leave a cent or two over. Someone may need to add the difference.
- Customs differ a lot from country to country. In some places a service charge is already on the bill, so check before adding a tip on top.
- Some people tip on the amount before tax and others on the amount after tax. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount.
- The calculator does not use a currency symbol, so it works with any currency.
