How to use the volume converter
Type an amount in the Value box, choose the unit you are converting from and the unit you want, then press Convert. Use the swap button to reverse the direction. A table below the answer lists the same volume in all 15 supported units, which is useful for recipes, fuel, paint or aquarium sizes.
How the conversion works
All units are exact multiples of the milliliter:
- 1 cubic inch = 16.387064 mL (because 1 inch = 2.54 cm)
- 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches = 3.785411784 L
- 1 US gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 US fluid ounces
- 1 US fluid ounce = 2 tablespoons = 6 teaspoons = 29.5735295625 mL
- 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.54609 L, and 1 UK pint = 1/8 UK gallon = 568.26125 mL
- 1 cubic foot = 1,728 cubic inches = 28.316846592 L
- 1 cm³ = 1 mL, 1 L = 1,000 mL, 1 m³ = 1,000 L
Worked example
To convert 10 liters to US gallons: 10 / 3.785411784 = 2.641721 US gallons (rounded to six decimals). One US gallon back to liters is exactly 3.785411784 L.
Good to know
- Cups: this converter uses the US customary cup, which is exactly 8 US fluid ounces = 236.5882365 mL. US nutrition labels use a rounded "legal cup" of 240 mL, and many other countries use a 250 mL metric cup, so recipe results can differ slightly.
- US vs UK: a UK pint (568.26 mL) is about 20% larger than a US pint (473.18 mL), and the same is true for gallons. Pick the right one for where your recipe or measurement comes from.
- Teaspoons and tablespoons here are the US customary sizes (about 4.93 mL and 14.79 mL), not the rounded 5 mL and 15 mL metric spoons.
- Results are displayed with up to six decimal places. Negative volumes are rejected and zero is allowed.
